Jelly Roll
Starring Vernel Bagneris & Morten Gunnar Larsen

Several months into the run of "Jelly's Last Jam," the musical based on the life of Jelly Roll Morton, a funny and exhilarating two-man Morton show appeared across town at Michael's Pub, and it ran for five months. A kind of antidote to the Broadway show, which trashed Morton's music and made him into a racist monster, it was barely an hour long and was based closely on the musical autobiography that Morton recorded at the Library of Congress in 1938. Now, a year later, the show has reappeared at the Pub in expanded form for an open-ended run, and it again includes the brilliant, elusive Vernel Bagneris, who plays Morton, and the virtuoso Norwegian pianist Morten Gunnar Larsen, who plays Morton's music, note for glorious note.
