Guilmant in America
On August 31, 1983, Felix-Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) gave the first of four recitals on the opus 700 Ferrand & Votey organ installed in Festival Hall at the Chicago World's Fair. James Hammann reproduces Guilmant's first American concert by playing the same works on a splendid, rare and restored Farrand & Votey organ. This CD celebrates that organ and Guilmant, the first organist to have enjoyed a transcontinental career, including three concert tours in the United States in 1893, 1897-98, and 1904. The programs are memorable for several reasons, but chiefly for the inclusion of classical works composed for the organ.
