Doug Gittings
Original Austin Outlaw

After playing in Steven Fromholz's band in Colorado in 1971 (Steven is now the Texas State Poet Laureate), Doug Gittings arrived in Austin in the spring of 1972. In Austin at that time, everyone seemed to know everyone else, and Doug played in a variety of small restaurants and clubs which provided entertainment almost every night. Jerry Jeff Walker invited Doug to perform at the Luckenbach Dance Hall, and even paid Doug's union dues. Townes Van Zandt invited Doug to travel and perform with him at the Old Quarter in Houston. Doug gratefully acknowledges the influence and friendship of Mance Lipscomb, Vince Bell, Michael Martin Murphy, B.W. Stevenson, Gary P. Nunn, Michael Livingston, Mickey Rafael, Charles John Quarto, and younger (though budding) sister, Lucinda Williams.
