Dorothy Kirsten in New Orleans

One of the pleasures of working with the New Orleans Opera Archives project is the element of surprise. As tapes are identified and cataloged, one can never predict what might turn up! This is certainly the case with this recently discovered recording of excerpts from of November 1958 performance of Verdi's La Traviata. At the top of our "wish list" was the hope of finding a recording of Dorothy Kirsten as Violetta, a role she sang here in 1946 and 1958, not only because her performances are so fondly remembered, but also because recordings of Kirsten in this music are all too rare. Imagine then, if you will, our surprise and pleasure, when a box marked only La Traviata turned out to be one of these very performances.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this CD will be invested in The New Orleans Opera Endowment Fund to secure the future of Opera in New Orleans.
